How to Use Counter Displays to Drive Up Sales

Counter Displays are a great way to attract additional sales.

Studies show that impulse purchasing is on the rise and there is no more perfect opportunity to cash in on additional sales than while the customer is standing in line at the check-out.

Shoppers waiting in line are a captive audience, if only for a few short minutes.  In this environment, well-positioned counter displays that catch the eye are extremely effective for last minute sales success.

Here are the top 5 things to consider when designing and placing your counter displays in retail locations to ensure maximum impact.

1) Eye Catching Attractiveness

Appeal to the human eye with an attractive design. Clean and fresh colors will engaged customers and spark their curiosity in your products.  A die-cut header or unique style can also draw attention, but be careful not to make the design too busy or complicated, as this can confuse or deter buyers.  Keep any text short and punchy and remember that a picture can speak a thousand words.

2) Digital Images or Media Players

The sound and moving images of a media player will naturally draw more attention to your display.

Media players also give you the opportunity to explain the benefits of your product or demonstrate its use, providing a compelling reason for that last minute purchase.  Also, the sheer visual effectiveness of a counter display with a media player motivates retailers to keep it stocked and centrally located.

3) Convenience of Purchasing Product

Impulse purchase decisions are made in a split second.  You must ensure that your products are easy to access and remove from your display.  Having the wrong peg hooks or having products packed too tightly onto the shelves of your counter display hinders access and gives the customer time to have second thoughts.

4) Location, Location, Location

Space on the checkout counter itself is at a premium and not always readily available in retail stores.  However many retailers appreciate the value of impulse purchases and will have tables or shelves close to the checkout area to accommodate counter displays.  Remember that competition in these prime locations is fierce and retailers will tend to seek the most innovative and interesting designs.

5) Maintaining your footprint

While permanent counter displays are initially more expensive than cardboard shippers, they give you a much better chance of maintaining your in-store footprint once placed.  Cheaper cardboard or plastic displays are often disposed of when empty, whereas am attractive permanent counter display will tend to be retained and reloaded.
